Use Active Directory replication. The best benefits are obtained by using Active Directory replication. This traffic is automatically encrypted; therefore, zone replication traffic also is. Domain controllers authenticate to each other, ensuring that the zone replication traffic goes to authorized servers. To use Active Directory replication, select Active Directory Integrated zones when configuring DNS. When this is done, zone transfer is disallowed, as shown in Figure 3-3.

Note An additional security configuration, secure cache against pollution (shown in Figure 3-4), is set by default. It can be found on the Advanced page of the DNS server properties. This setting prevents some referral DNS information from being added to the cache. Normally, when a query for name resolution is made, additional names and IP addresses might also be returned. If these addresses are not correct, the cache is said to be polluted or poisoned. The addresses might not be correct because of an attempt by an attacker to redirect communica tions to servers under her control. When this setting is used, the DNS server will not place referral names in its cache unless they are in the same domain as the query. That is, if a query for myserver.tailspintoys.com returned addressing information for yourserver.wingtip toys.com, the information would not be cached.
